The winter just passed was easily one of my most enjoyable. I spent more time snowboarding than I ever have done before. The majority of that was spent on my splitboard exploring the amazing backcountry terrain BC has to offer.

Any one who has spent time ski touring knows the night before you head out becomes like Groundhog Day. You start to repeat your well drilled routine packing your kit, ensuring that you don’t forget any of those essential items. We all have been or know of someone who has turned up to the trailhead without something important like their skins or avy transceiver. To the list of essential things to pack for a day in the backcountry, this winter I added “camera”.

I’d taken my camera on touring days here and there but this winter I decided to just take it every time. No exceptions. With no real goal other than just to have a camera there in case I wanted it. No expectations. There was no pressure to get a “banger” pow photo or anything like that. Literally it just sat in my bag for times when I felt like it would be nice to get a photo of “that”, whatever “that” may be. Hence why there aren’t a lot of skiing and snowboarding photos in this collection of images (which is perhaps the most authentic depiction of what those long days out back are really like). Something I found personally refreshing. It definitely made my days in the backcountry more enjoyable because the enjoyment of splitboarding came first and if I took a few photos that was a bonus.

This approach is something I’m hoping to do for many seasons to come; hopefully one day I can put together a slideshow of images from my life long journey of spending time outside, walking slowly up hills and staring at the mountains.
